The Wolves

by Sarah DeLappe

Directed by Chris Baldock

Season: 15 October-1 November, 2025

The Mockingbird Studio, Belconnen Arts Centre

The Wolves follows nine teenage girls as they warm up for their indoor soccer games. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigour of a pack of adolescent warriors. As the teammates warm up in sync, a symphony of overlapping dialogue spills out their concerns. By season’s and play’s end, admidst the wins and losses, rivalries and tragedies, they are tested and ready – they are The Wolves.

“The scary, exhilarating brightness of raw adolescence emanates from every scene of this uncannily assured play” – The New York Times

“The Wolves is a delightful meditation on society, sex, and soccer…Delappe’s dialogue is hilarious and idiosyncratic, moving swiftly from gross-out humour to pain…a smart, sympathetic, female work” – Village Voice

From the Director:

What happens when you get a plethora of talented local young women who are all vying for only 9 roles? You go a little crazy and decide to have TWO casts of said talented local young women, you extend the season by a week and you hold on for dear life. Such was the case when auditioning this very special and unique play. I wanted to fill the void left by the unfortunate circumstances Canberra Youth Theatre found themselves in this year by offering an opportunity for 16 to 25 year olds to perform in a great play – a play that spoke to them about what it’s like to be a teenager on the cusp of adulthood with all its triumphs and challenges, and a play that speaks to an audience who can see a little of themselves in each of these beautifully drawn characters.

And so here we are: Mockingbird’s fifth main stage production at the beautiful Belconnen Arts Centre. With a Mockingbird Too production, Perfect Match, showing in November and our first annual Monologue Slam in December, we have somehow come through our first year as theatre-company-in-residence a little wiser, a little older and with our hearts a little fuller. To see Canberra audiences starting to embrace our productions, reviewers singing our praises and understanding what we are trying to achieve (“…be sure to visit when next this imaginative company produces another high quality theatrical experience” – Peter Wilkins, Canberra Critics Circle. “Since he and his theatre company…became theatre-company-in-residence at Belco Arts, Chris Baldock has been exciting Canberra theatregoers with the excellence of his productions” – Bill Stephens, Australian Arts Review.), and the actors, both emerging and established, wanting to share the vision and standard we are trying to achieve, we here at Mockingbird are excited about what lies ahead.

If you haven’t already, please take a look at our incredible 2026 season on our website and consider subscribing to our main stage productions. Or, if you really would like to see us flourish and get the word out to Canberra audience that they would be crazy to not see us, please consider donating via our SUPPORT page where you can get tickets and benefits for your generosity. Do you have a business that might consider being our patron? We would love to hear from you. We aim to be your local quality theatre company.

I am so proud to add The Wolves to Mockingbird’s achievements. The journey to the opening nights has been a fantastic experience for everybody involved. With a third of rehearsals spent on script analysis, character development and relationship building alone, seeing this talented bunch grow into their roles with such passion and to see them bloom into these fabulous performances, has been privilege to watch and help nurture and I can’t wait for audiences to see what they have created. Making something difficult (as this play can be) seem easy takes skill and these talented actors have risen triumphantly to the challenge. Life has, sometimes hilariously, imitated art so many times during the rehearsal process proving just how incredible Sarah DeLappe’s writing is.

PS: A shout out to Kara Taylor who had to leave the production for medical reasons ten days before the opening. Thank you for your contribution in helping shape the play. And to Eleanor Graham for beautifully playing #0 in both casts and to Grace O’Mahoney for donning #0’s jersey for the other team as well as playing #14 so wonderfully in her own.

As an added bonus, it also gives her parents the rare experience of seeing her anywhere near a sports field (a once-in-a-lifetime event).
