Rachel Watson longs for a different life. Her only escape is the perfect couple she watches through the train window every day, happy and in love. Or so it appears. When Rachel learns that the woman she’s been secretly watching has suddenly disappeared, she finds herself as a witness and even a suspect in a thrilling mystery in which she will face bigger revelations than she could ever have anticipated.

“Paula Hawkins’ international best-seller [sold] 20 million copies worldwide… Onstage, The Girl on the Train carries that same heart-thumping humanity with all the juddering twists and intermittent periods of darkness – adapted for wider appeal by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel… Don’t miss the hurtling ride of The Girl on the Train.” – London Theatre Direct“

“The stage adaptation is a nicely-balanced vodka martini: sharp, invigorating and definitely not sugary-sweet… [A] fast-moving, beautifully-structured narrative… As the drama speeds along to denouement, layer upon layer upon layer of intrigue and tension by turn obscure and reveal foreboding harbingers of a calamitous climax.” – The Bath Magazine

“Suspenseful… a harsher, suburban, sex-filled variation on The Mousetrap.” – The Arts Desk

NOTE: Contains strong language & depicts scenes of domestic & sexual violence & alcoholism. PLEASE DO NOT AUDITION IF THESE ARE A TRIGGER FOR YOU.

Characters (with playing ages)

Rachel Watson – 20s-30s. A demanding role and a huge part, since she’s seldom off stage. Unstable for most of the play but works her way towards an understanding of herself and her history.

Anna Watson – 20s-30s. Appears to be in the perfect relationship but as the narrative unfolds, we find serious conflicts between her and Tom. She is initially annoyed by Rachel but becomes an ally at the end.

Meghan Hipwell – 20-30s. The object of Rachel’s admiration and of her longing to be like her. But in fact Meghan is a deeply conflicted and disturbed woman. PLEASE NOTE: There is a possibility that all of Meghan’s scene will be filmed. Any actor who is interested in this is encouraged to apply.

Tom Watson –  20s-40s. Presents as a pleasant, caring, straightforward man, but is in effect devious and a serial abuser of women.

Scott Hipwell – 20s-40s. Rather out of his depth with Meghan, quick tempered and will resort to physical violence.

Kamal Abdic – 20s-40s. Meghan’s psychiatrist and her lover. He becomes a suspect in the murder of Meghan. (We are looking for a male actor of Asian, Indian or Middle Eastern heritage to play this role.)

D I Gaskill – 30s-50s.

Methodical, able to keep an open mind, not your conventional detective.
