ABOUT THE PLAY

Funny. Fearless. Tender. Outrageous. Moving.

The Vagina Monologues brings together a wonderfully varied collection of voices and experiences, exploring the body, sexuality, identity, desire, vulnerability, pleasure, anger, humour and empowerment.

Based on interviews with more than 200 women, the play moves effortlessly from the hilarious and irreverent to the intimate and deeply confronting. Since its first performances in New York, it has been performed around the world and has become one of the best-known pieces of contemporary theatre about women’s experiences.

We are now looking for a diverse ensemble of performers to bring these stories to life

Who are we looking for? 

We are looking for performers ranging approximately from their early 20s to their 70s.

We warmly welcome women of all backgrounds, ethnicities, appearances and accents, as well as trans men or gender diverse people who were assigned female at birth/have lived experience with having a vagina. 

There is no particular “type” we are looking for. These monologues call for individuality, honesty, humour, vulnerability and a willingness to connect with the audience.

Some pieces are bold and hilarious. Some are playful and mischievous. Others are tender, angry, intimate or deeply moving.

What to prepare

Please bring one monologue of your choice (2-3 minutes).

It does not need to be from The Vagina Monologues — in fact, there is no need to choose a particular piece or character from the show.

Choose something you enjoy performing and that gives us a good sense of who you are as a performer.       Most importantly, we want to see you.

After auditions, the directors will assign the individual monologues to the selected cast, taking into account each performer’s strengths, personality and connection with the material.

 NOTE ABOUT THE MATERIAL

The Vagina Monologues contains frank discussions of bodies and sexuality, strong language and adult themes. Some pieces also deal with potentially distressing subjects, including sexual violence and abuse.

Not every performer will be working with this material. The content of each performer’s assigned monologue will be discussed openly during the rehearsal process.
