Rehearsals: Commencing 14th September with rehearsals on Monday & Wednesday evenings (7-10pm) and Saturday afternoons (1:30-5:30pm).

Casting Note:

For this production, we are taking a deliberately gender-conscious approach to the traditionally male-dominated world of Posh. We are seeking female and non-binary performers to play the male characters of the Riot Club and Jeremy. We are seeking actors of any gender identity to play the character of Chris. These characters will remain male within the world of the play.

About the Play:

Old money, new problems.

Welcome to the Riot Club.

Ten privileged Oxford students have gathered in the private dining room of a country pub for their termly club dinner. They have money, connections, expensive wine and an extraordinary sense of entitlement.

As the evening descends from ritualised debauchery into something much darker, Posh takes a viciously funny and increasingly confronting look at class, privilege, power and the people protected by it.

Laura Wade’s dark comedy is fast, sharp and highly ensemble-driven, moving between absurdity, humour and genuine menace.

Please note all ages and identifying characteristics listed are the character’s. All roles are open to actors of all races, sexes, creeds, orientations and abilities – other than previously specified.

The Riot Club:

The Riot Club is a tight ensemble that needs to feel like a group with years of history, shared rituals, rivalries, affection and resentment between them.

Guy Bellingfield (male, early 20s) – Ambitious, enthusiastic and desperate to impress. Guy wants to become the Club’s next president and has planned an extravagant evening to prove himself. Jeremy’s godson. This role involves choreographed physical violence.

James Leighton-Masters (male, early 20s) – President of the Riot Club. Increasingly conscious of the potential consequences of the Club’s behaviour and keen to protect his future. Confident and authoritative, but his control over the evening – and the other members – begins to slip.

Toby Maitland (male, early 20s) – A committed member of the group and its culture. Toby damaged the reputation of the Club prior to the events of the play and is now expected to face ritualistic consequences. This results in him becoming extremely intoxicated. This role involves choreographed physical violence.

George Balfour (male, early 20s) –  One of the Club’s larger-than-life personalities. Boisterous, privileged and thoroughly invested in the traditions and excesses of the Riot Club.

Alistair Ryle (male, early 20s) – Intelligent, angry and ideologically driven. Alistair’s resentment towards the world outside the Club becomes increasingly dangerous as the evening progresses. This role involves choreographed physical violence.

Hugo Fraser-Tyrwhitt (male, early 20s) – Highly intelligent, observant and somewhat apart from the rest of the group. His family has status but considerably less money than many of his friends. Dry, witty and emotionally perceptive, with more going on beneath the surface than he initially reveals.

Harry Villiers (male, early 20s) – Confident, entitled and provocative. Comfortable pushing boundaries and accustomed to getting what he wants. Something of a playboy and proud hedonist. This role involves choreographed physical violence.

Miles Richards (male, early 20s) – One of the Club’s newest members. More moderate, thoughtful and socially aware than many of the others, although still very much a product of privilege. His discomfort with the Club is apparent throughout, though he is ultimately sucked in to their debauchery and misbehaviour. There is a scripted kiss for this role, and choreographed physical violence.

Dimitri Mitropoulos (male, early 20s) – Extremely wealthy and completely comfortable enjoying it. Big personality, socially confident and capable of holding his own within a group that repeatedly targets his background (Greek). Challenges Guy’s ambitions to become Club president.

Ed Montgomery (male, early 20s) – Another of the Club’s newest members. Sensitive and eager, Ed is readily swept up in the group’s behaviour, partly as a result of his own older brother’s former membership. Though he is excited by the Club and its traditions, he is ultimately the most shaken by the events of the play.

Other Roles:

Jeremy (male, 40s-60s) – A former Riot Club member who has gone on to significant political influence, and Godfather to Guy. Charming, polished and completely at home in the structures of power that the younger members aspire to enter. Appears in the prologue & epilogue.

Chris (male 40s-60s) – Owner of the pub in which the Riot Club holds its dinner and Rachel’s father. Practical, straightforward and increasingly alarmed by what is happening in the dining room. Chris becomes central to the play’s dramatic climax. This role involves choreographed physical violence.

Rachel (female, 20s) – Chris’s daughter, who works at the pub. Intelligent, grounded and unimpressed by the Riot Club’s privilege. Rachel is subjected to increasingly inappropriate and intimidating behaviour from the Club. There is a scripted kiss for this role.

Charlie (female, 20s-30s) – A sex worker hired as part of the evening’s entertainment.

Please note: This play contains mature and potentially confronting material. All staged intimacy and violence will be carefully coordinated during the rehearsal period – it will not be improvised.
